Herzogstand Mountain

During the four-minute ride up to 1,600 meters and as soon as you exit the Herzogstandbahn cable car, you will be greeted by unique panoramic views of the Two Lakes Region. From the summit of the Herzogstand, Bavaria lies at your feet, stretching all the way to Munich. The panoramic view sweeps from the north, across the vastness of the Bavarian Alpine foothills, over Kochelsee and Walchensee, to the towering Alpine chain in the south, from the Zugspitze to the Karwendel and far into the Tyrolean mountains. Because of this overwhelming panorama, the Herzogstand was the favorite mountain of the “Kini.”

While painters such as Lovis Corinth and Franz Marc preferred the two lakes, the fairy-tale king liked to stand above it all. He used the bridle path he had laid out to reach his favorite mountain and spent the night in the royal house. This was rebuilt after a fire and now houses the mountain rescue service, among other things. From the pavilion at the summit, he enjoyed the fairytale panorama, and a monument commemorates the 100th anniversary of his death.

All good summits come in threes! - Fahrenberg, Martinskopf, and Herzogstand
A ride on the Herzogstandbahn cable car takes you to three summits in one go – or a different one each time. Right after the mountain station, you can climb the Fahrenberg with its memorial chapel. A path leads you past the mountain inn to the Martinskopf or another path to the Herzogstand.

The “King of the Mountains” themed trails on the Herzogstand invite you to rediscover the mountain world from the perspective of the Bavarian king and retrace the places where he stayed in the mountains. Numerous information boards with original quotes and historical images convey a previously unknown picture of his stays and mountain residences on the Herzogstand.
